What Cory’s Talking About Now
What AI Says About Your Business
Most business owners have never checked what ChatGPT says about them, and the answer is usually wrong, thin or about a competitor. Being citation #17 is basically the same as not being cited.
SEO Isn’t Dead, It’s Evolving
GEO (generative engine optimization) builds on a solid SEO foundation. It doesn’t replace it. You can’t build the second floor before the first one’s solid.
Why Sitewide CTR Should Go
AI answers inflate impressions on questions that never get a click, so sitewide click-through rate (CTR) can fall while nothing is wrong. Lead with clicks and conversions.
Winning Without A Billion-Dollar Brand
At Comcast and Campbell’s, the brand name does half the SEO work for you. Most businesses don’t have that. What transfers, what doesn’t and what smaller companies waste money copying.
My First SEO Client Paid $40 A Month
I was still working a full-time job when I took that client on. Here’s how I got there.
Journalism, Then A Recession
I studied journalism at Temple University because I was curious about people: what they search for, and why they choose what they choose. I graduated into the Great Recession with no newspapers hiring, so I paired that curiosity with my technology skills and pointed both at marketing. I went back to Temple later for an MBA in marketing.
Agency Side
My first marketing work was on the agency side, on NBA, NFL and NASCAR accounts.
Comcast And Campbell’s
Then I went in-house. I spent about 10 years running SEO at Comcast and Campbell’s, and I managed media at Campbell’s too.
BCC Interactive
Plenty of businesses aren’t tiny, but they aren’t Comcast either. They need the same strategies without the budget. So I started freelancing on the side, and that became BCC Interactive. The best practices still worked for smaller sites. Without a famous name behind you, you just have to work harder to find the openings, and you can’t take shady shortcuts to get there.
Outside Work
I’m an undefeated amateur boxer in the USA Masters Boxing division, with 3 tournament titles.
Three Comcast Stories I Still Tell Clients
A Year Of Redirects
When Comcast rebranded, the site moved from Comcast.com to Xfinity.com. It took us almost a year of checking, every single day, that the redirects were right. A site migration done properly is that slow and that tedious.
Digital Cable By Xfinity TV
The product had always been called digital cable. Then the brand team told us it was Xfinity TV now. Nobody searched for Xfinity TV. The compromise was “digital cable by Xfinity TV.” SEO is the marriage of brand and demand.
Why Is Comcast Losing To RCN?
Much smaller providers like RCN were beating us at the local level. They were more localized and served locally relevant content, so we ran the same strategy at scale. It’s the reason location pages work for businesses with more than one location.
