Sound Familiar?

These are the four problems cannabis marketing teams bring to a first call. Multi-state operators usually have all four.

The Ad Platforms Keep Saying No

Google and Meta both restrict cannabis advertising, and ads that do run get disapproved without warning. The channels every other retailer leans on are mostly closed, so search has to carry more of the load.

Your Menu Lives On Someone Else’s Domain

Product pages and checkout sit on a third-party menu platform, and the rest of the site sits on yours. The two halves don’t behave the same way in Google’s eyes, and orders finish somewhere your analytics can’t see.

Ten Stores, One Map Pack Problem

Someone searches “dispensary near me” and Google shows three stores. If each location doesn’t have its own optimized profile and landing page, a competitor down the street takes the visit.

AI Answers Your Customers’ Strain Questions

Shoppers ask search engines and ChatGPT what a strain is like before they buy it. Those answers cite a source. If it isn’t your content, it’s a directory’s or a competitor’s.

How Cannabis Customers Search, And What We Build For Each Stage

Most dispensary websites only cover the first stage and the last. Orders come from owning all four, in every market you operate in.
1

Finding A Dispensary

They search: “dispensary near me” or “dispensary in [city]”

A Google Business Profile and a landing page for every location, with accurate hours, photos, reviews and the same name, address and phone number everywhere it’s listed.

2

Researching A Product

They search: “[strain] strain” or “gummies near me”

Strain spotlights on the cannabis strains you carry, category pages and consumption guides written around the exact terms shoppers use. This is the content AI Overviews pull from.

3

Comparing Stores

They search: “[city] dispensary deals” or “[your brand] reviews”

Deals and loyalty pages that can rank, plus the reviews and listings shoppers check before they choose where to go.

Ordering Or Visiting

They search: “[your brand] menu” or “[your brand] [city] hours”

Menu pages Google can crawl, brand coverage in search, and order tracking that follows the customer from your site to the menu platform and back.

How Ascend Went From No SEO Strategy To $113M In Organic Revenue

Ascend Wellness Holdings runs dispensaries in seven states: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. When we started, SEO wasn’t part of the marketing strategy. We built it from local search up.

  • Local first, market by market. We optimized the Google Business Profiles and built landing pages for the Local 3-Pack in every market Ascend served, so each store could be found before anything else.
  • Product pages built around how people shop. We worked with Ascend’s internal teams to redesign the menu architecture around the highest-volume non-brand product searches. After launch, clicks on strain-related terms rose 720% year over year (Google Search Console).
  • A blog AI answers cited. In six months, the High Note blog grew from 483 to 1,249 ranked keywords and from 47 to 245 page-one placements, counting organic, AI Overview and People Also Ask spots together (Semrush), and it became the source Google’s AI Overview cited first for “blue dream strain,” “spliff” and “zoap strain.”

How Ascend Built A Google Ads Program Inside Google’s Cannabis Rules

Ascend had no paid search program. A two-market pilot grew into a program we ran for three and a half years, built on landing pages that fit Google’s policy, a weekly watch on disapprovals, and cross-domain tracking that put every paid order in Google Analytics.

What Makes Cannabis SEO Different

Most SEO advice assumes you can buy ads, control your whole website and sell in all 50 states. Cannabis businesses get none of those, so search engine optimization for cannabis needs its own approach.

Paid Channels Are Restricted

Google Ads doesn’t allow ads for products that induce highs, and Meta prohibits ads that promote THC. CBD ads are allowed only in narrow cases. So organic search carries more weight in cannabis than in almost any other retail category.

Your Menu Is A Second Website

Third-party menu platforms put your product pages on a domain or subdomain you don’t fully control. We audit both halves, fix what we can on your side and push the platform for the rest.

Age Gates Can Hide Your Site

Google’s Search Central guidance says to overlay content with an age gate instead of redirecting every URL to one gate page, which can drop everything but that page from search. Googlebot should be able to crawl without triggering it.

Every State Is Its Own Market

Cannabis is legal state by state, so a multi-state operator competes in separate local markets with different competitors and rules. We build pages market by market, and your compliance team signs off on what each state allows.

Our Cannabis SEO Strategy, Step By Step

Every cannabis business starts from a different place, so there’s no template for cannabis SEO strategies. But the order of operations is the same, and it’s built so the first wins come from stores and pages you already have.
1

Audit And 90-Day Roadmap

We start with what’s already working. Which stores win the map pack, which product pages rank on page two and need a push, and where competitors and directories are taking searches you should own. That becomes your roadmap: the first 90 days, in order of impact. Start with your free roadmap →

2

Local Foundation For Every Store

Each location gets a fully optimized Google Business Profile and its own landing page, with the same name, address and phone number on every directory and cannabis listing site. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so we build a review routine your budtenders can keep up with.

3

Keyword Map Built From Your Menu

Brand, local, product, strain and informational searches each do a different job. We map your categories, strains and consumption methods to the target keywords people actually search, then go after the long-tail terms with clear intent before the broad ones everybody fights over.

4

Technical SEO Across Both Halves

A cannabis website is usually two sites. We audit the one you control and the menu platform side by side, so search engines can reach both: crawling, indexing, age gates, site speed, mobile experience and structured data. Problems that need a vendor fix get documented and chased until they’re done.

5

Content, Links And AI Visibility

This is where cannabis content marketing and SEO meet: strain spotlights, product breakdowns and consumption guides that answer shoppers’ questions and get cited in AI answers. Then link building from cannabis publications, local media, events and partners, because many sites still won’t link to cannabis content.

6

Report On Orders And Visits

Every month you see what search did for the business: online orders, calls and direction requests by store, not just rankings. Then we adjust the plan based on what’s converting, store by store and market by market.

How We Measure Cannabis SEO

Rankings and organic traffic are the start of the report, not the point of it. For dispensaries we track:
  • Online orders and revenue from organic and paid search, by store and landing page, with cross-domain tracking so orders that finish on the menu platform still count
  • Map pack actions calls, direction requests and website clicks from every Google Business Profile
  • Rankings by market for local, product and strain searches, store by store and state by state
  • First-time customers from search, where your order data allows it, so you can see who search is bringing in for the first time
  • AI visibility how often your content is cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT for strain and product questions

Cannabis SEO Questions, Answered

Cannabis SEO (also called marijuana SEO, or CBD SEO for hemp brands) is search engine optimization for the legal cannabis market. A cannabis SEO agency helps dispensaries, cannabis companies and CBD brands improve their online visibility with people ready to buy. Our cannabis SEO services include local SEO for every store, product and strain pages built around real searches, technical SEO for age gates and third-party menus, and tracking that connects search to orders. We also cover AEO (answer engine optimization, so AI answers cite you) and paid search where the platforms allow it.

Not for cannabis products. Google’s Dangerous products or services policy doesn’t allow ads for products that induce highs. Some dispensaries still run search campaigns with landing pages written to fit the policy and someone watching for disapprovals every week. That’s how the Ascend paid search program ran. Either way, SEO is the channel you control.

It depends on where you start. An established dispensary site with gaps in its targeting can see movement in about 60 to 90 days. A site that needs bigger fixes, or a crowded market like a major metro, is usually more like 3 to 6 months. A new site going after competitive terms can take 6 to 12 months or longer. Your roadmap maps your starting point first. More on that in how long SEO takes.

Dispensary SEO is mostly local: the map pack, store pages and menus. CBD and hemp brands often sell CBD products online and compete on product searches nationally, which looks more like e-commerce SEO. The ad rules differ too. Google allows some topical CBD ads in three locations, and Meta allows CBD ads with prior authorization. We’ve done both: dispensary SEO for multi-state and single-store retailers, and e-commerce SEO for a hemp-derived CBD brand whose product page reached #1 for “full spectrum CBD gummies for pain.”

Yes, in its own market. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so a well-run single store with strong reviews and a complete profile can win nearby searches against a much bigger brand. A single-store Massachusetts dispensary we worked with moved from #70 to #7 for its town’s main “dispensary” search in the first month (Semrush). Where MSOs pull ahead is product and strain content, and that’s where a focused content plan closes the gap.

Usually, yes. Cross-domain tracking can follow a customer from your site to the menu platform so the order shows up as revenue in Google Analytics. How much you can see depends on what the platform supports, and we check that in the audit.

It’s a free 30-minute call on Zoom, and Cory runs it himself. Before we talk, we audit your site and check how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity describe you. On the call we show you the gaps, what your competitors are doing and the first 90 days, ranked by impact. No pitch deck, and you keep the roadmap whether or not we work together.

Every plan is a custom solution, scoped to your goals, how many stores and states you cover, and how fast you want to move. The roadmap call is where we size it. If you want a sense of the market first, our SEO pricing guide breaks down what agencies charge and why.

You’ll find three kinds of shops: a cannabis marketing agency that does a bit of everything for the industry, a dispensary marketing agency focused on store promotions, and a generalist digital marketing agency where cannabis is one more client. A good cannabis digital marketing agency covers search first. What matters is whether your SEO partner can handle the map pack, third-party menus and ad restrictions, then tie it all to orders. Ask for cannabis results with dated numbers and a named source. We wrote a full guide on how to choose an SEO agency.

No, and we’d rather be upfront about it. We work with B2B companies, e-commerce brands and local businesses too. Our cannabis experience includes Ascend Wellness Holdings, where we ran SEO and paid search for years, plus a single-store Massachusetts dispensary and a hemp-derived CBD brand. What carries over is the part that matters for dispensaries: winning local search store by store, building product content people search for, and tracking it to orders.
