Someone asks Google a question about what you sell. Before any links show up, an AI summary answers it and lists a few sources. Your site is either one of them or it isn’t.

Most businesses have never checked which one it is.

That’s what AI Overview tracking and monitoring are for. You don’t need to buy anything to start. Google already gives you a free report, a manual check takes about 10 minutes, and you only need a paid tracker once you know which job it has to do.

Key Takeaways

  • Start with the free report. Search Console's generative AI report shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date.

  • It counts impressions, not clicks. The report doesn't show clicks or the searches behind them, so you still need manual checks or a tool to see which questions you're cited for.

  • A manual check takes 10 minutes. Search a fixed list of questions logged out, note who gets cited, and repeat monthly.

  • Track more than informational questions. Semrush found informational searches made up 91.3% of AI Overview triggers in January 2025 and 57.1% by October, as commercial searches picked up more of them.

  • Pick a tool by the job. Rank-tracking suites, local map trackers and multi-engine prompt panels each answer a different question.

  • Don't trust a score you can't check. A good tracker shows you the actual AI answer behind every number.

What AI Overview Tracking Actually Measures

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the sources it used. Tracking them, like rank tracking for regular results, means answering four separate questions, and tools often blur them together:

  1. Does an AI Overview show up for this search at all? Plenty of searches don’t trigger AI Overviews.
  2. Are you one of the cited sources? This is the one most businesses care about.
  3. Where do you sit among the sources? Being the first card is not the same as being the seventh, hidden behind “Show more”.
  4. Are you named without a link? AI Overviews sometimes mention a brand in the text without citing its website.

Keep those four apart in whatever you track. A report that lumps them into one brand visibility number will look better than your actual position. Our guide to measuring GEO performance covers the full set of AI search metrics if you need more than AI Overviews.

Start Free: Search Console's Generative AI Report

Google Search Console, Google’s free site report, has a generative AI performance report that counts how often links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s help page links straight to it, and it sits with the other Performance reports. Google rolled it out to every website worldwide on August 31, 2026.

What it shows:

  • Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode over time
  • A breakdown by page, country, date or device
  • A filter for text searches versus multimodal (image-based) searches

What it doesn’t show:

  • Clicks. Google’s help page describes it as an impressions report, and clicks from AI features stay mixed into your normal Web totals.
  • The searches behind the impressions. You can see which pages appear, not which questions triggered them.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. It only covers Google’s own AI search features, not other AI search engines.

Open it before you do anything else. If a page you care about shows zero impressions, that’s a finding, not missing data. If it shows plenty, the next step is finding out which questions you’re winning.

Check Manually In 10 Minutes

The free report tells you which pages show up. A manual check tells you which questions, and who you’re up against. Here’s how we run it:

  1. Write down 15 to 25 questions your customers ask. Mix “what is” and “how do I” questions with buying questions like “best [service] for [situation]”.
  2. Open a logged-out Chrome incognito window. Your search history changes what you see when you’re signed in.
  3. Search from your market. AI Overviews change by location. If you serve a city you’re not in, use a VPN set to that city and confirm the location before you start.
  4. Expand every AI Overview. Click “Show more” so you see all the cited sources, not just the first few cards.
  5. Log what you find. Whether an AI Overview appeared, whether you’re cited, your position, and who else is cited.
  6. Re-run the same list every month. AI Overviews come and go, and the sources change. One check is a snapshot. Three months of the same list is a trend.

The Columns We Log For Every Question

Date | Question | AI Overview shown? (Y/N) | We're cited? (Y/N) | Our position among sources | Named without a link? (Y/N) | Competitors cited | Notes

Paste it into a spreadsheet and fill one row per question each month. The competitor column is the one that tells you what to fix.

AI Overview Tracking Tools, Sorted By Job

Once a monthly manual check gets too big to run by hand, an AI Overviews tracker earns its place. It re-runs your questions on a schedule, tracks your ranking among the cited sources, and flags changes for you. Pick one by the job you need done, not from a ranked list. Look, most “best AI Overview tracker” articles are written by companies that sell one.

We’ve left prices out on purpose. Comparisons we reviewed disagree on what the same tool costs, and AI tracking add-ons change price often. Check the vendor’s own pricing page before you buy. For the rest of a local business’s toolkit, see our guide to local SEO tools.

How To Pick An AI Overview Tracker

Ask any vendor these five questions before you sign up:

  1. Can I set the location? AI Overviews change by city. A tracker that only checks from one national location will mislead a local business.
  2. Can I see the raw AI answer behind every number I track? Screenshots or the full answer text, not just a score.
  3. How often does it track? Daily, weekly or twice a month monitoring changes how fast you’ll spot a drop in visibility.
  4. Which engines does it cover? Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot. Pay only for the ones your customers use.
  5. Is it a live check or a snapshot? Some tools re-run every prompt on schedule. Others sample answers less often, which can make counts swing.

Our Take

Don't pay for a tracker that won't show you the actual AI answer behind its score. AI answers change from one run to the next, and a single "AI visibility score" hides whether the tool even saw what your customers see. If you can't open the answer and check it, you can't trust the number or explain it to anyone else.

Tracking AI Overviews For A Local Business

Local businesses have it harder. The AI Overview for “best plumber near me” in one neighborhood can cite different businesses than the same search two miles away, just like the map pack. Our local AI search statistics show how often AI tools leave local businesses out.

That means a national rank tracker isn’t enough. Check from the towns you actually serve, either by hand with a VPN or with a location-based tracker like BrightLocal’s or Local Falcon. Then compare your visibility to the businesses that do get cited, not to a generic score. Step 7 of our local SEO audit walks through the same check for ChatGPT and Gemini.

AI Overview Tracking Mistakes

  • Only tracking one kind of question. AI Overviews used to be almost entirely informational. Semrush’s study of more than 10 million keywords found informational searches made up 91.3% of AI Overview triggers in January 2025 and 57.1% by October, with commercial and transactional searches taking a bigger share. Track both.
  • Checking while logged in. Your own history shapes what you see. Use a logged-out window.
  • Checking once and calling it a trend. AI Overviews appear, disappear and swap sources. You need the same list over months.
  • Trusting one score. “AI visibility: 62” tells you nothing about which questions you’re winning or losing.
  • Building reports on tracking tags Google never confirmed. A widely shared story about Google tagging AI Overview links turned out to be a browser extension. Our GEO measurement guide has the details.

What To Do With What You Find

Tracking only matters if it changes what you do next:

  • To get cited more often, start with the questions where competitors are cited and you aren’t, then read our guide to Google AI Overviews and its five ways to improve your chances.
  • To report it to a boss or client, use the quarterly report template in our GEO measurement guide.
  • If AI Overviews are taking clicks on searches you need, look at the paid side. Google now places ads inside AI Overviews, and our guide to AI Overview ads explains how.

Check The Free Report First, Then Pay For The Job You Need

AI Overview tracking doesn’t start with a tool. It starts with the free Search Console report you already have and a list of questions your customers actually ask.

Run the manual check for a few months. When it gets too big to do by hand, pick the tracker that does the job you need: rankings plus AI Overviews, a local map, or every AI engine at once. And whichever you choose, make sure you can see the answer behind the number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Partly. Search Console’s generative AI performance report shows impressions for your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device. It doesn’t show clicks or the searches that triggered those impressions, so you still need manual checks or a tracker to see which questions you’re cited for.

Yes. Search Console breaks impressions down by country. For cities, check by hand with a VPN set to each location, or use a location-based tracker. BrightLocal sets its tracker up one location at a time, and Local Falcon checks a grid of points across a map.

No. Semrush found the share of keywords with an AI Overview peaked near 25% in July 2025 and was 15.69% by November 2025. Informational questions trigger them most often, but commercial searches have been picking up a bigger share.

Not necessarily. BrightEdge found only about 17% of sources cited in Google’s AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10. Rankings and citations are related but separate, so track both.

They’re fine for a one-time spot check. They usually test from a single location at a single moment, and AI Overviews change by place and over time, so don’t treat one free check as your baseline.

Monthly is enough for most businesses, using the same list of questions each time. If you’re actively changing pages to win citations, track the most important questions weekly until they settle.
